Salt Dough Ornaments

And so it came to pass, that it was Christmas time and salt ornaments were made. I’m pretty cynical about rampant commercial exploitation of this religious holiday, but LOVE making home made presents and ornaments. Here is how I make salt dough for ornaments: I put

1 cup salt
2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup water

in the mixer until the dough is formed. Add flour until it is no longer sticky. Roll out the dough on a surface dusted with flour – 1/3inch thick is great. Use various cookie cutters to make shapes. Use a toothpick to make holes for strings. Place shapes on flour-dusted aluminum foil on baking tray and bake at 250 degF for 2 hours. Leave to dry overnight. Decorate 🙂

We used Crayola Washable Paint, 3D glitter glue, glitter paint and Mod Podge to seal.

We made over a hundred ornaments and gave each one several layers and coats, so this project has kept us going all last week. Here are a couple of the ornaments we made. Obviously I, as the mature one, decorated with the 3D glitter glue *giggle*
